In partnership with When We All Vote and She Should Run, The Martin Agency has launched Princess & the Pea-tition, a modern twist on the classic fairy tale, timed to coincide with National Voter Registration Day. Authored by Kim Nguyen, Creative Director at The Martin Agency, and illustrated by Libby VanderPloeg, the story delivers a nonpartisan message highlighting the importance of democracy and using one’s voice in elections. Published by Gloo Books, the story is available in print, as a podcast and as an animated short film, allowing its message to reach audiences across multiple mediums.

Princess & the Pea-tition tells the story of a girl named Princess who challenges the unfair “Official Real Princess Test” and advocates for a democratic and inclusive way to select a leader. Through her “pea-tition,” she rallies the townspeople and becomes the first elected leader. For author Kim Nguyen, the project is deeply personal. As the daughter of Vietnamese refugees who fled the loss of democracy, she is passionate about ensuring power comes from the people. Her daughter Quynh inspired the character of Princess, adding even more meaning to the story.

“I wanted to write a funny and kind story for kids about the importance of democracy, elections, and the impact of every person’s voice,” commented Nguyen. “I am so excited to share this message with children, families, educators, and communities everywhere to serve as a timely reminder that elections are so important. Our country can only move forward if we all participate and vote.”

The launch of Princess & the Pea-tition is part of The Martin Agency’s larger initiative, “Now Upon a Time,” which reimagines classic fairy tales with modern and empowering messages. The series aims to address timely issues with creative storytelling that resonates with today’s world, encouraging inclusivity and participation.

“What could be more relevant than a story about democracy and the idea of creating a fairer and more just world? As part of the creative evolution of “Now Upon a Time” — from idea to podcasts, books, and short films — I can attest to how Kim’s Princess & the Pea-tition will bring joy, spark curiosity and inspire a sense of responsibility to all who read it, regardless of their age,” said Danny Robinson, CEO of The Martin Agency and author of the award-winning “Now Upon a Time” book Lil’ Ruby Riding Hood.
