As we head into the 2024 U.S. Presidential, House and Senate elections, Interpublic hosted an employee text banking training and outreach event. Text banking is a way to connect with voters to help ensure robust election participation. The event was hosted in partnership with VoteRiders, a non-partisan, not-for-profit organization working to ensure that all citizens are able to exercise their freedom to vote. VoteRiders focuses on voter ID education, so that voters aren’t unfairly turned away from registration, or from the polls.
The focus of this text-banking initiative is to address voter ID laws that can be intimidating or difficult to understand. For example, VoteRiders research found that 55% of people living in states with stricter photo ID requirements did not know they needed to bring ID to the polls. This confusion is especially true for those voting by mail, young voters, and even poll workers.
Additionally, research shows that almost 15% of voting-age Americans do have an expired or outdated driver’s license or state ID. This disproportionately affects BIPOC voters, women, youth and student voters, voters with disabilities, low-income and unhoused voters, voters 65+, nonbinary voters, returning citizens, and voters whose primary language is not English.
In just the first day of the event, Interpublic texters were able to reach about 34,000 prospective voters through the program.
