To celebrate Hispanic Heritage month, SOMOS, Interpublic’s Hispanic and Latino heritage group, hosted the event “Latinos at Work: Advancing Brightly without Burning Out,” welcoming Daisy Auger-Domínguez author of Burnt Out to Lit Up and Inclusion Revolution.
Auger-Domínguez began the talk noting that “organizational growth, dynamism and innovation thrive when diversity, equity and inclusion bloom.” That said, driving change can also lead to burnout, especially against a backdrop of an existing collective exhaustion, which is often amplified for individuals who come from diverse backgrounds and experiences. She also spoke about the negative physical effects chronic stress can have and noted that setting aside time to embrace joy, awe and curiosity at work, and encouraging your teams and colleagues to do the same, can help alleviate burnout.
The program also featured a fireside chat between Carol Frazer Haynesworth, Executive Director, Impact & Inclusion, Interpublic, and Natalia Hernández, Executive Head of CIA Product and Innovation Analytics, KINESSO. The two spoke about the opportunity for marketers to better understand and address the Hispanic community in the United States. They underscored that the Latino population should not be addressed as a monolith, but rather through the lens of nuances, such as generation, language, country of origin and sub-cultures. It is also imperative, the pair noted, that agencies bring Hispanic voices to the table across all levels.
